FIGURE 05 The instrument goes blind

How to read this

still mark = grade A — an audited / settled reading. Both rails here are grade A, so they sit dead still.
shimmering mark = grade C — uncertain; the amplitude is the uncertainty. (Grade B sits between: a faint life.)
cyan = an independent number — here the historian's own compiled billings (Coen/McCann), a third-party ruler.
amber = a seller-owned number — here the internet revenue the sellers report to PwC (IAB), counting their own logs.

Reduced motion: every shimmer becomes a static hatched band — denser for a softer grade — so the uncertainty is still seen, just not moving.

cyan rail — historian's compiled billings, US$m (Coen/McCann, going dark) · amber rail — internet revenue reported by sellers, US$m (IAB/PwC, born and rising) · y-axis is US$m on a log scale · x-axis is year

In 2007 the independent compiler counted internet advertising at barely half the sellers' own total — $10,529m against $21,206m — then the historian's ruler stopped, while the seller-reported number climbed on to $294,593m by 2025.
